Nigerian National Volunteer Service (NNVS)
NNVS Department is under the Political and Economic Affairs, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF)
It was established in 2003 by the Federal Government.
NNVS is not an agency or commission, it is a Department in the OSGF
Volunteerism is considered as an altruistic activity intended to promote good or improve the quality of human life. It comprises activities undertaken of free will for the general public good and where monetary reward is not the principal motivating factor.
Volunteerism is inclusive and requiring participation of all interested citizenry including People Living with Disabilities.
Volunteerism is not a full time employment. It is a sort of employment or engagement for a specific period.
Volunteers are only entitled to stipend and reimbursement of out of pocket expenses.
People volunteer so that they can contribute in proffering solution to the societal challenges.
Government recognize volunteerism as a veritable tool for National Development. That is the reason for the establishment of NNVS Dept. to coordinate volunteering activities in Nigeria.
The Federal Government on Wednesday, 9th December, 2020, approved the National Policy on Inclusive Volunteerism and its Action Plan for implementation. It will provide direction and guidelines for effective management of volunteerism for development.
The Government has established the National Database of Volunteers in Nigeria under the control of NNVS/OSGF.
The impact and contribution of volunteerism to the economy can be measured and reported.
The Policy provided that the years spent on volunteer service should be counted as part of years of experience.
Volunteer’s right is protected while rendering volunteer services.
